My Reason For College

The countdown is on. I've registered for another summer class starting on Monday and I am only 2 something more years to go til I have my college degree, and I guess another year or so until I am teacher certified. I get a lot of questions from people asking me "Why are you still going to college to become a teacher, while running a successful business already?" I have plenty of answers for that one, but I can tell you my biggest, most hugest (yup, I said "most hugest") reason is: My grandmother.

My grandmother has pretty much lived with us for my entire life. She has raised me along side of my parents, and has always been there for me. She is from the Philippines, and has always stressed that college has been the way to go. "You must get your degree," I've heard time and time again. Over the past couple of months, my grandmother had a stroke and pneumonia. Now she uses a walker, and gets tired very easily. I see her getting weaker everyday. It pains me, in all honesty, to see her this way. She isn't the same woman who use to chase me around the house, holding my dirty diaper, and telling me to "run for your life", flinging the folded diapers at my heels. But I know she is holding on and doing her best, so that she can see us grow up a little bit longer.

Now, more than ever, I want to have that college degree, not only for my daughter, but for my grandmother. But I am not stopping there. My grandma always told me to keep going. And I will. All the way up to the doctorates degree in either English Literature or Communications. Sure that means endless hours of school, homework, and sneaking in late night bloggings to vent, but at the end of the day, I owe my grandmother that much. If there ever will be a way to repay her for everything she has done for me, it will be to get my college degree, and to "keep on going."

  2. Well I'm behind you... rooting you on. I am still working towards my college degree also... taking one to two classes... every other semester.

It's a challenge... but one with a great accomplishment at the end of the journey.
