Writing about more than being a mom

It's hard for me to sit down and find something to write about that doesn't involve my life as a mom. I look back at journals and past blogs that I used to write in, and see them filled with an overflow of creative ramblings, all ranging from the craziest things imaginable to the next. It was easier to write, I think, back then, because that was all I knew. I didn't have the responsibility of caring for another human being, nor did I give two cents about anyone besides myself. Even though being a mom is hands down the best thing that has ever happened to me, when I want to sit down and start seriously writing, I feel like my mind lately has just been closed to writing about parenthood. Granted, I've got some great material on my Trulybear, but lately, I've been stuck.

So how do you get your creative juices flowing again and expand your writing?

First of all, you need to remember what makes you, you. This is hard for me, because I feel what makes me, me, is being a mom, which is what I also hear from other mothers. Which is great, but looking down deeper is something that I haven't done in a very long time.

I'm extremely passionate about
  • young mothers
  • entrepreneurship
  • art
  • music
  • singing
  • dancing
  • traveling
  • operas
  • musicals
  • the ocean
  • and the list goes on and on.

Once I had that list of things that I'm passionate about, that makes me me besides being a mom, I felt like I could write again. Quick fix right? I love being able to write what I know, but sometimes I need to be reminded of what I know.

How? I know have this cork-board above my desk, filled with words, pictures, and items that I feel represent who I am. Truly's on there plenty of times, but so is a piece of the prom dress my grandmother made for me, a picture of the beach I want to live on one day, a wide array of song notes to remind me how much I love music, even my childhood home in Germany to remember all the trouble I got in. Whenever I feel like my inspiration is lacking, and my writing needs a boost, I make a cup of tea and just take a look at this board.

What are some of the things your passionate about?

  2. great post! I sometimes have trouble coming up with something to write about, so I will definitely write out a list as you did. I wish I had a place for a corkboard of inspiration. It sounds wonderfully helpful!

    Have a great weekend!

  3. Thanks so much for stopping by! Lisa & Marion, the inspiration board is so much more better than how I describe it. The impact is phenomenal. Marion thank you for posting your first comment and following! :-)
